Elizabeth Sugarbaker, MD

Elizabeth Sugarbaker, MD, is a pediatrician at Ranken Jordan who cares for children with a wide range of complex medical needs.

She has been a pediatrician for nearly 30 years. Before attending medical school, Dr. Sugarbaker was an elementary school teacher which gives her a special understanding about working with children and families.  Dr. Sugarbaker received her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine where she also completed her residency in Pediatric Medicine at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

Her approach to medical practice is to engage the whole family in treatment and to nurture small goals for patients that turn into huge accomplishments.

Her devotion to children has led her to care for patients around the world. Prior to her tenure at Ranken Jordan, she regularly traveled to Kenya as medical advisor to two orphanages and in working with several NGOs developed a medical clinic to serve the local area.

Dr. Sugarbaker was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and is a sustaining member. This organization recognizes physicians who unconditionally represent the AOA motto of “Being Worthy to Serve the Suffering.”

As an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Sugarbaker was the recipient of the distinguished teaching award in clinical teaching and was named the Health Resource Center Pediatrician of the Year honoring her work as pediatric advisor and volunteer pediatrician for the free, student run, community health clinic.  Both are examples of her dedication to mentoring tomorrow’s pediatricians who will be in charge of the medical care of our future generations.

As a member of the Ranken Jordan Medical Staff, Dr. Sugarbaker works closely with the larger team of medical subspecialists, therapists and nurses caring for the very medically complex patients. She states she has found, at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, a team with empathy and compassion who work so well together to create the bridge between the acute care hospital and a safe and healthy home and community environment for each patient leaving Ranken Jordan.
