Celebrating National Coffee Day with our Perk Volunteers

It does not take long after a walk around the hospital for the aroma of freshly brewed coffee to sneak up your nose. In a 24-hour hospital, the caffeinated beverage not only fuels our workforce but brings cozy comfort to guests and caregivers.

The Perk Coffee station is a cornerstone of the hospital’s community. Using an impressive 5,600 K-cups and 130 gallons of creamer annually, this pop-up coffee shop is more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s the hub of connection at Ranken Jordan. When Shawn Dryden took on the role of CEO, one of his first initiatives was to install complimentary coffee machines for staff and guests, ensuring that the warmth of a good cup of coffee was always within reach, even outside of the Perk hours. Various departments use hosting the Perk as an opportunity to collaborate with other teams and educate the greater hospital on the incredible work being done. On weekends, the spiritual care department even hosts a special Sunday morning edition of the Perk inspired by the wells of ancient days where people would gather for refreshment in body and spirit.

Longtime volunteers Diane and Bob Newett cherish their time at the Perk, saying, “The Perk is an opportunity to make new friends and deepen our relationship with those we have known for a long time. The family members of patients and the Ranken Jordan staff are an inspiration to both of us.”

For Connie Thompson, a retired nurse, volunteering at the Perk is a way to stay connected to the healthcare community and her daughter, who is the volunteer coordinator. “I love meeting so many of the workers that give so much to the kids at Ranken Jordan. I also love getting to interact with some of the patients as well,” she shares.

This sentiment is echoed by Patti Kirschbaum, a former social worker, who enjoys reconnecting with old friends and colleagues, and seeing the joy on the faces of parents and kids who come for a treat. “Parents and kids are so happy to get coffee, hot chocolate or apple cider. We make everyone’s Fridays!!”

Claudia Kane finds immense satisfaction in the happiness that the Perk brings to everyone. “I love to see how happy everyone is on the Perk day. Everyone loves the variety of coffees we offer, especially when we have the fun flavors,” she says. The interactions between volunteers and staff create a unique bond that might not happen otherwise, making the Perk days truly special.

Nancy Skrivan sums up the essence of the Perk beautifully: “What do I love most about hosting the Perk? That’s a tough question because there is so much to love. I love that we are able to provide just a moment of respite for staff members, where they can have a little friendly conversation with their coffee. I especially love getting to see our patients as they go about their day and then over time, watch their miraculous progress!”

National Coffee Day goes beyond coffee. The timeless drink brings us together for an opportunity to pause. Nurses and therapists, patients and caregivers, receptionists and specialists, doctors and executives, all take a small moment during the busy day. With warm cups in hand, they cultivate community, connection, and laughter.

All of Ranken Jordan meets at the Perk for small moments that make a big difference.
