Spinal Cord Injury Care Overview

At Ranken Jordan, we strive to create a meaningful, positive experience for patients and families by providing Care Beyond the Bedside that focuses on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of children and their families.

Our dedicated team offers comprehensive medical and rehabilitative services and expertise for patients with spinal cord injuries ranging in age from infants to young adults. We work with you and your child to develop the best care plan tailored for each unique patient. We also provide patients and families with the best support and resources to ensure long-term success on your journey.

Individualized, Expert Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

Our team collaborates with you and your child to set individualized medical and/or rehabilitation goals designed to meet your child’s specific needs and to prepare for going home. Some goals can be achieved quickly, while others may take longer and will continue to be worked on even after discharge from Ranken Jordan. We will partner you with the right team members to help reach those goals.

Patients receiving care at Ranken Jordan after a spinal cord injury will typically have goals related to:

  • Mobility: moving and transferring in various environments with equipment as needed
  • Self-care skills: dressing, showering, toileting, etc.
  • Prevention of health complications
  • Participation in recreation and leisure
  • Return to school/work
  • Equipment to maximize mobility, function and accessibility at home, school and in the community
  • Psychosocial and emotional well-being

It’s important to regularly assess and identify what barriers are present that may limit progresstowards goals and towards eventual discharge to home. Work with your care team and therapyteam to regularly identify and discuss barriers. This list may change throughout your child’s stay.

Expectations for Therapies

  • Reference your child’s schedule or ask the nurse when your child’s therapies are for the day
  • Ask for help to get your child up and ready for therapy sessions
  • Help your child practice skills outside of therapy sessions
  • Review and progress through education topics outlined by the care team
