An Incredible Recovery: Hiyab and Wuhbto at Ranken Jordan Their separation is complete. Their rehabilitation is just beginning.

Press Resources

Twins Hiyab (hee-YAB) and Wuhbto (wuh-HUB-toe) were born in Aksum, Ethiopia, conjoined at the head. Craniopagus conjoined twins are extremely rare. They occur in about one in 2.5 million live births and make up less than 6% of conjoined twins, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Through a global pediatric partnership, the girls traveled to St. Louis for life-changing medical care. Their remarkable medical journey, from multiple surgeries to a successful separation to now recovering at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, has captured international attention.

Separation was not the end of their story. Hiyab and Wuhbto’s rehabilitation is just beginning, and they will remain at Ranken Jordan as long as they need. We are honored to care for them. Follow their progress with updates on this page.

Hiyab and Wuhbto’s Story
In March 2025, shortly before their first birthday, Hiyab and Wuhbto traveled from Ethiopia to St. Louis, Missouri. World Pediatrics led the effort to bring them here for care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and Ranken Jordan.

In February 2026, surgeons at Cardinal Glennon successfully completed their cranial separation surgery. Just weeks later, they celebrated their second birthday in March 2026. ‘

Today, Hiyab and Wuhbto are recovering after their series of complex surgeries while receiving ongoing rehabilitation and medical care at Ranken Jordan.

Through a multidisciplinary therapy regimen at Ranken Jordan, the girls are beginning to take full advantage of the miracle of their surgeries at Cardinal Glennon. They are now able to participate in individually focused therapies to do the activities of daily living they could not do while conjoined.

Although they are still in the middle of an extensive medical journey, they are making progress toward one day pursuing independent lives.

Creating fun for the kids at Ranken Jordan looks a little bit different these days as we do our best to protect our community from COVID-19. Trinity Bennett, who is on the Board for All Abilities STL and has her own small businesses, knew our kids could use some use some entertainment and offered to pull out some of her tricks to put a smile on their faces, from a distance, of course. Each year, Ranken Jordan partners with All Abilities STL to offer an inclusive trick or treating opportunity for the community, and from that experience, Trinity knew she was the perfect person to offer her services to entertain our fragile community. Before we knew it, a dinosaur appeared in our windows, dancing and showing messages for the children and staff at Ranken Jordan.
